Running web on Parallella - How to for beginners?

Hi,

I just came across with Parallella parallel programming, etc FOR EVERYONE. I am interested to create a web on Parallella...however I wonder where should I start my journey using it. Most uController dev kit comes with the hardware, dev tools (compiler), sample codes (apps), etc. Despite all those, the dev kit can be challenging to the beginners. I am embedded programmer using C and embedded hardware developer (32 bit uC) and most of the time works with Microsoft OSes. What you have for me on Parallella to achieve the above (running web on your parallel computing) - AS YOU TERM : parallel programming for EVERYONE? Please make suggestion?

Indeed your guess is true enough... I am thinking about running the device as the web server. My real needs require
2 Ethernet ports. One for web access (via internet) and the second port for LAN (local area network). As you may also
guess, the web will exposed all the GUI (user interfaces) and the LAN will do the communication (via LAN) with various
other embedded devices to perform specific controls like lighting, power ON/OFF, etc. Any suggestion about having 2 Ethernet ports on Parallella?

Hi Gravis,

USB to Ethernet adaptor is more appropriate when you are with the machine, that is for instance... you are using the mentioned adaptor with your laptop. NOT for the embedded devices AS PER apps I've mentioned above (web server).

There is a chipset from Wiznet W5200 that does Ethernet. It requires the SPI port for communicating with the uController and you just need to configure it to the tcp or udp socket AS it is implemented based on the tcpip hardware stack. Every of this chipset support up to 8 simultaneous sockets. See this site for the W5200 module called WIZ820io.

This daughter board can easily be built, yet someone needs to tweak the Ubuntu kernel to make it seemless integration into it. Else, someone has to write an SPI apps to access the chip.

You can download a free demo of a web server IP core from http://www.webphyfpga.com. It allows connection of an Ethernet RJ-45 jack to standard LVDS IO on your FPGA and provides a complete web-based GUI interface solely in the FPGA fabric. If you have a few spare LVDS IO on your board, this would give you a second Ethernet interface with a web server for your GUI that works "out of the box" without even using the ARM at all.
