Linux user looking for a heads up

Ok I'm posting this from my Parallella (wooooo! so awesome, so wow). I'm a moderately literate linux user, not a full ninja . .basically I can do anything I need to, but I have to research a bit to do it. After setting up the SD card, I was wondering if there are any gotcha commands to updating this system. Is it safe to update via apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade? I only ask this because after physically copying the kernal to the SD card, I'm wondering if a the standard dist-upgrade will mess that up. Also, are there any other system administration concerns I should be wary of?

You're fine to use apt-get to update your system, but you might want to take a backup first (e.g. using dd) before editing /etc/apt/sources.list and updating to a new release.

The kernel won't be updated via APT and at present this must be done manually. Note also that if you need to build modules or apps that require the Linux headers you need to build against the Parallella sources, and if you were to install these via apt-get you will end up with a version mismatch.
