using parallella as render farm

Postby postwendend » Fri Jul 26, 2013 8:24 am

i guess that some developers of non-proprietary software packets like cycles renderer for example would create a special parallella build but whats about close software as example vray or arnold. i think there's only some x86 linux builds avaible such vray stand alone.

will it be possible to run a virtual box on parallella - the differences are defently the architecture of the hardware.

this is analogous to trying to run an XBox 360 game on a Playstation 3. it doesn't work like that. more info below.

the computational powerhouse of the parallella is Epiphany coprocessor, not the ARM processor.

1) an emulator (like virtualbox) may compile to ARM but it will not use the Epiphany coprocessor.
2) adding this layer of emulation which would make it slower.
3) your program would have to use Windows on that emulator which would make it even slower.

bottom line: if it's an open source program you may be able to modify it to utilize the Epiphany coprocessor but if it's closed source, forget it.
