The firmware is (among other things) the FPGA bitstream that is used to tie the Epiphany FMC daughtercard to the Zynq based system. Without a proper bitstream you cannot connect to the Epiphany. We don't provide a bitstream for the ZYNQ board, just the ZedBoard. Possibly, you may be able to make the necessary adaptations to the ZedBoard design to make it work on the ZYNQ board.

The GNU toolchain is an essential part of the eSDK. It contains the e-gcc compiler, binary utilities, debugger and more. The eSDK adds the other parts, like host and device run-time libraries, BSPs, examples and documentation.

If the GNU toolchain is not found, the SDK build script will halt, asking you to build the toolchain and put it in place before continuation.
