Zynq 7020

Hi,

This is going to be a nice board when I look at the new Update.
One thing I didn't recognize yet is that the Epiphany and Zynq are 2 different chips. I always thought they are combined in one Package
What is the price for a Zynq-7020 in higher volumes? I can't find any price.. Just some announcements that it would be starting witch just 15$.
What price difference is Zynq-7020 and Zynq-7010?

Using 7020 device is great news - it triples available logic resources compared to 7010. Xilinx has a history in supporting that kind of open source/hardware projects (like NetFPGA), kudos for them.

Question: what package/speed grade of Zynq 7020 will be used in Parallella?

Also, I'm kind of interested how many layers does the current Prallella PCB have?

@moeter There is a significant price difference between the zynq 7010/7020, but you would need to talk to Xilinx directly to find out what kind of pricing you could get in volume. I believe the $15 price point you refer to is for the 7010.

@wuher We are using the XC7Z020-1CLG400CES (same one as on the Zedboard). Basically the same chip as in the Zedboard but in a smaller package. Right now, we are probably looking at a 10 layer board.

If that means that a ~$100 board will contain the Zedboard device (minus less pins) AND the Parallella, that will be interesting.

I do have like an orange warning light slightly blinking about the lack of USB connector a la the zedboard and all kinds of webpacl licenses, but I hope the whole will work and allow some fun projects to be implemented.

Let's hope it is easy and preferably fast, to create a .bit file (or equivalent) to put on the SD card for booting up a new FPGA bitstream, "Impact" with a USB connection is harder tp do on Linux, but it works fast.

Also I am not sure how easy it is to interface essential zinq-arm libraries (or whatever) to do neat interfacing with the FPGA, and maybe partial reloading (not essential, of course). I don't think the Xilinx ARM tools are free, or maybe with a locked license.

Of course I'll be glad if it all works smooth with the ISE webpack, it's fun to make nice FPGA designs and test them in practice, especially on the 7020s pretty fast and big enough infrastructure. Together with the floating point power of the Adaptiva chip that could well be a winner design.

Roman will be publishing a guide explaining how to replace the bit stream of the default Parallella Ubuntu 12.04 SD image distribution with a custom bit stream. It is quite straightforward.(as long as the content of the FPGA bitstream is valid..)

Will there be after-kickstarter boards available that also have the Zynq 7020?

Yes, there will be zynq7020 based Parallella boards offered for sale, but the price has not been finalized yet.
