Discovering the Parallella board on network (UDP broadcast)

Postby ninlar » Wed Jun 28, 2017 5:53 pm

I was thinking about adding a daemon to Parabuntu that allows you to easily discover the IP Addresses of any parallella boards on the network. I noticed the default nameserver for the boards is Google DNS, so it doesn't register the hostname "parallella" with the local network nameserver that it is on. To make it easier to discover boards I was thinking about adding a simple daemon that listens for broadcasts of a client trying to find them. Anyone have any objections? I would also add a client to the eSDK for finding the boards.

Stock Parabuntu supports local discovery via mDNS (Avahi).

Depending on your OS / router one of these hostnames should just work™
parallella
parallella. <-- trailing dot
parallella.local

For Windows versions prior to Windows 10 you might need to install a mDNS client.
"Bonjour Print Services for Windows" seems to be the most recommended.

Thanks Ola!

That would explain why it shows up on my home network, but not when I bring it into work. The DNS at work puts all hosts on the "companyname.int" domain rather than ".local" which would explain why it doesn't seem to resolve by host name at work, but does at home.

got it to respond to a ping on parallella.local at work. Thanks! I'm running an mDNS scanner right now to see if I can spot it announce itself as well.
