Linux network troubles and SSH

Hi all,
I have just put the parallela ubuntu 14 on the sd card as specified in http://www.parallella.org/create-sdcard/
There is no way to ping or see the device through arp-scan.
I have modified /etc/network/interfaces to setup the dhcp or to set a static IP, by mounting the sd-card on my laptop.
No way to communicate with the board, pinging or accessing via ssh.
I don't really know if SSH is already installed in the provided linux image: is it?


So how can I log into my parallela from the network, without using monitor/keyboard or serial communication?
