On creating image on sd card

I tried creating a image on sd card using linux (opensuse) command dd (for parallella board 7010 hdmi) . After burning, i've checked the sd card with file explorer and instead of list of directories I have list of files with gibberish names. Where I am doing wrong? (SD is VFAT format). I will try another way. Any suggestions appreciated.
