Parallella Ubuntu 14.04 release

Postby aolofsson » Thu Jun 12, 2014 12:01 pm

Hi all,

We have made significant improvements to the official Parallella Ubuntu distribution and have taken this opportunity to update the distribution to Ubuntu 14.04 ("trusty tahr").

Changes:
  • Upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04
  • New linux kernel prints boot messages to display rather than to tty serial port.
  • Audio and hdmi config fixes included (please see recipe for exact changes)
  • New FPGA bit stream that fixes a reset sensitivity on some boards
  • MPI and OpenCL included
  • Tweaks/installs to make "out of the box" experience more pleasant

Tested:
  • Wifi works. Tested with Edimax EW-7811Un.
  • Boards tested here boot with USB 100% of the time. I use the Logitech K330 wireless mouse/keyboard for testing.
  • HDMI audio works out of the box (tested with Vizio 1920x1080 TV)

Limitations:
  • Firefox crashing intermittently, still working on solution.
  • Serial port not turned on by default. Can be enabled with different device tree, but causes intermittent boot hangs.

Updated sd card creation instructions:
http://www.parallella.org/create-sdcard

We could really use your help in testing out this distribution, so please try out the new distro and let us know what needs to be fixed/improved as soon as you can. If you are interested in the complete recipe that we followed from A-Z, then check out the README found here: https://github.com/parallella/parallella-ubuntu

Good luck,
Andreas

At bottom of the readme there are some known issues listed.

For headless config without wireless the only one of interest to me is:

No serial port access with default Linux kernel.

Are there instructions somewhere that I've missed to enable this?

Thanks for reminder. To enable serial port you need to edit and compile the device tree. Very simple and fast operation.(2 minutes) I will add instructions. Long term goal is to get serial port working by default.

Thanks that seems like it should be easy enough!

I'll have a look into the device tree edits necessary this weekend, I need to do first power up/test of my Parallella this weekend (received it last Friday and haven't had time yet) so I'll have a play with UART stuff after I've got that all going and report back. The readme here - https://github.com/parallella/parallella-bin has instruction for compiling the new device tree so plenty of info to get me started.

I tried latest ubuntu-14.04 using these files, I experienced some issues.

1f4abc33a27770570c235e3e3ccd0af2 ubuntu-14.04-140603.img.gz
8eab4b6228e32a0432279f76de51300f kernel-hdmi-140603.tgz
d920ca30ce6c1a9b1da841fa18e5dda3 parallella_e16_hdmi_gpiose_7020.bit.bin

1. no network

This is solved by "sudo rm /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules"

2. no HDMI sound, SMPlayer stuck

not yet solved

3. no usb audio driver

I found that the USB audio driver disabled by kernel config.
Why did you disable it?

4. nano editor is not installed

Nano is a default text editor of Debian/Ubuntu distribution.

5. There are many ~files in the system.

The criminal is Emacs

shodruky,

Thanks for the feedback!!

1.) Sorry, link on the create-sdcard page was outdated, please try again. The right file to download (now linked up):

http://downloads.parallella.org/ubuntu/ ... 611.img.gz

2.) The persistent rule issue should be resolved in the new one.

3). In terms of USB sound, I'll look and see, we might have grabbed an older kernel...stay tuned.

4.) Yes, I also saw the smplayer getting stuck in 14.04 at times. Seemed to be hit and miss? Did you try selecting different sound destinations?

I have tried this out tonight. Downloaded all new bitfiles and Ubuntu release and dd'ed to a new partition

I deleted /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent etc file with no effect.

My board is hanging at the following state of the boot.

@timbat, which FPGA bitstream and kernel are you using?

Hi Andrew,

The kernel here linked off the create-sd card page http://www.parallella.org/create-sdcard/

http://downloads.parallella.org/boot/li ... efault.tgz

and the headless 7020 image of the same page.

Is there another source for kernel and bitfile that should be used ?

Hi Tim,

Can you try using the HDMI kernel and FPGA bitstream.

Cheers,

Andrew
