I read the quick-start-2 page says host usb port is not operating, would that be fixed in late firmware update?
without host usb port, is there other serial access. what tool do I need.

There is a 3 pin serial port header next to the Ethernet connector.

Based on the schematic and NC7WZ16 spec
Pin 1 transmit from Epiphany logic levels 0 and 3.3 volts
Pin 2 receive (can take up to 5.5 volts in typical use)
Pin 3 ground

I have no way to verify this, so use at your own risk.

Tim

P.S. the schematic refers to the connector being PBC36SAAN but this seems to be 36 way.

thanks, good to know I have a fall back plan when the network stop working.

This is correct - J2 next to the Ethernet connector is a 3 pin serial header. The pins are marked on the pcb - closest to the Ethernet is Tx and GND is closest to the edge of the board.
A standard USB to serial adapter like this one should work great.

is it as simple as a direction connection like this,
board edge side,
gen1 GND ----------------- usb black line, GND
gen1 RX ------------------- usb green line, D+
gen1 TX --------------------usb white line, D-
near rj45,

I tried (with ethernet cable connected), my ubuntu x86-64 can not recognize it as /dev/ttyACM0 (this is how I connect to zedboard UART), even though there is 3V signal coming out.

In the case of the zedboard there is a USB-to-serial adapter on the zedboard itself - hence all one needs is a USB cable from PC to zedboard.

Those pins on the IIa are a serial port rather than a USB port, thus if you have a PC with a serial port, connect that to the pins on the ||a - TxD of one port to RxD of the other and vice-versa

If your PC does not have a serial port, then you need a gizmo like that linked to by Graham (in that particular case the USB-to-serial adapter chip is concealed inside the moulded USB plug). There are other sources for this kind of adapter, although that one is particularly neat.

OK, with one board console broken and doesn't show up on nmap with fresh image, tried hooking up the serial port header with two different usb-serial adapters (which showed up as valid COMs) at speeds from 9600 to 115K w/o luck. Is the serial port known to work with gen1 boards?
