I thought they were generally switching supplies these days. Wouldn't a 2.5A linear power supply be pretty chunky?

Technically you can have a switching supply without feedback regulation ...

I have heat sink on Zynq chip. Some have heat sink on epiphany chip as well. Is it necessary?

I don't believe it is, but many choose to add one for good measure.
