Parallella Enclosure With Fan For ~$30

Postby z28pwr » Sun May 18, 2014 4:17 am

I was looking for a fan cooled enclosure for my Parallella and couldn't find anything in the US that I liked (There is a nice one in the UK) so I decided to modify a RPI case to work with the Parallel and this is what I ended up with after ~$30 dollars:

I really like the way it came out. The fan gets it's power from the board, the fan is very quiet and keeps the system between 124-129 F depending on what I'm doing.

Here is the parts list for those that want to build one:

GeauxRobot Clear Raspberry Pi Case Enclosure Box Dog Bone Shape $12.99 shipped with prime.

5 Volt 40 MM Silent Fan $10.79 shipped, there are cheaper options but this one is quiet.

The rest of the parts were purchased from Lowes:

1 pack of Nylon #8 washers
1 pack of Nylon 8-32 x 1 screws for the fan
1 pack of Stainless Steel 4-40 x 3/8's screws
1 pack of Stainless Steel 4-4 hex nuts
1 pack of small (#22) ring terminals

Assemble the enclosure and add the Nylon washers that you purchased on top of the Nylon washers that came with the enclosure, I did this to provide more support to the board, finish building the enclosure then place the fan so that it will be directly above both CPU's, use a dry erase marker to mark the outline then run a line from corner to corner which will give you an X indicating where you should drill a 1.5" hole for the 40MM fan. In addition to the 1.5" hole for the fan you will need four holes for the screws to hold the fan in place and I drilled an additional hole to run the fan cables. You will need to connect the J15 jumper by following these instructions (http://www.parallella.org/power-supply/).
